What is subsidized training?

In 2024, companies have an excellent opportunity to improve the skills of their employees without incurring large costs, thanks to the Bonus Courses for Companies through Fundae. Fundae, or State Foundation for Employment Training, allows companies to finance the training of their workers through bonuses on Social Security contributions. This means that companies can offer courses and development programs to their employees, improving their knowledge and skills, while reducing associated costs, using the funds available through Fundae. It is an effective and economical way to invest in the growth and continuous improvement of staff, benefiting both employees and the organization as a whole.

How does subsidized training work?

The first step is for companies to identify their specific training needs. This may include improving sales techniques, developing digital skills, fostering leadership, among other key aspects for the growth and efficiency of the company. Once the needs are clear, companies can choose two ways to select the right training provider. They can hire a specialized training center directly or delegate this task to an organizing entity. This entity will be in charge of finding the right trainers and managing the entire process, including the administration of the training credit.

Once the provider has been selected, the course begins. The formats of these courses may vary, being face-to-face, online or mixed, depending on the specific needs of the company and the nature of the course.

At the end of the course, the training provider issues an invoice that the company must pay. This is where training credit comes into play. The company uses this credit to cover the cost of the course. It is important to highlight that this credit is a fund that companies have for the training of their employees and that it can vary depending on the size of the company and its Social Security contribution.

Finally, the company recovers the money invested through a bonus in social contributions. This means that the amount spent on training is deducted from the contributions that the company makes to Social Security, thus recovering the investment made. This bonus mechanism allows companies to improve the skills of their staff without entailing an additional net expense.

What companies can access subsidized training?

The regulations establish that any company in Spain with at least one employee can access subsidized training. Eligible workers must be on the payroll, that is, be employed as employees registered with Social Security.

Those workers who are registered in the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA) and work independently, even if they collaborate with a company, will not be able to access the subsidized training.

The credit available for the formation of a company will depend on the number of employees and the contributions made during the previous year. This credit for training is determined based on the size of the workforce and the contributions made for the professional training of workers:

  • Companies with between 1 and 5 workers: a minimum amount of €420 per year for continuing training.
  • Companies with between 6 and 9 workers: credit equivalent to 100 % of the quoted amount.
  • Companies with between 10 and 49 workers: credit equivalent to 75 % of the quoted amount.
  • Companies with between 50 and 249 workers: credit of 60 % of the quoted amount.
  • Companies with 250 or more workers: credit of 50 % of the quoted amount.

In addition to the annual credit, there are maximum bonus limits per hour of training, which vary depending on the type of course:

  • On-site training: Up to €13 per hour per participant.
  • Mixed training: Up to €9 per hour per participant.
  • Online training: Up to €7.50 per hour per participant.

These limits ensure that training costs remain within reasonable margins and allow companies to plan their training programs efficiently.

Advantages of subsidized training

Subsidized training offers various advantages for both companies and their employees. Below, we highlight the five main ones:

1. Optimization of Financial Resources

Subsidized training allows companies to recover the cost of training through bonuses on Social Security contributions. This makes it possible for companies to invest in the development of their employees without incurring significant additional expenses.

2. Improved Competitiveness

By acquiring new skills and knowledge, employees improve their performance and ability to innovate. This translates into greater competitiveness for the company, which can better adapt to market changes and stay ahead.

3. Increased Employee Satisfaction and Motivation

Investing in the professional training of employees not only improves their skills, but also increases their satisfaction and motivation. Workers who see that their company cares about their development tend to show greater loyalty and commitment.

4. Compliance with Standards and Regulations

In many sectors, it is mandatory that employees receive specific training to comply with rules and regulations. Subsidized training makes it easier for companies to meet these requirements in a cost-effective manner.

5. Reduction of Staff Turnover

The possibility of professional development within the company is a key factor in reducing staff turnover. Employees who have opportunities for learning and professional growth tend to stay with the company longer, thus reducing the costs associated with hiring and training new workers.

Procedure to request subsidized training

  • Calculate your Credit

The training credit is the amount that your company has available annually for the training of its employees. This credit is calculated based on contributions for vocational training and the average workforce, using data from the Contribution Settlement Receipts from the previous year. The official application will calculate it automatically with information from the General Treasury of Social Security (TGSS). For a personalized estimate, you can use Fundae’s credit form. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees can accumulate unused credit for two additional years by checking the appropriate box before June 30.

  • Register in the Application

To manage the bonuses, you must register in the Companies’ Programmed Training application. This management can be done by the company itself or by an organizing entity. In groups of companies, one of them can assume this responsibility. If you prefer that an administrative manager handle everything, the company must register with the appropriate profile and authorize the manager as a user with a “manager” profile.

  • Inform the Legal Representation of Workers

If your company has Legal Representation of Workers (RLT), you must inform them about the planned bonus training. If you don’t have RLT, you can skip directly to the next step.

  • Communicate the Start of the Course

To start a course, you must first register the training action in the application and then communicate the start of the training group at least two days before its start. You must include details about the modality, duration, objectives, contents, place, date, instructor and participants.

  • Take the Training

During the training, ensure that it is free for participants, lasts no less than 2 hours nor more than 8 hours per day (unless it is on a single day), and that the number of participants does not exceed 30 in person or 80 in teletraining. At the end, give participants a certificate of attendance and an evaluation questionnaire.

  • Communicate the Completion of the Course

Before applying the bonus, you must communicate the completion of the course through the application, informing about the participants who completed the course (at least 75%), the costs of the course and the month in which you will apply the bonus.

  • Bonus Training

After communicating the completion of the course, you can apply the bonus to the Social Security Contribution Settlement receipts until December of the current year. Make sure you are up to date with the Tax Agency and Social Security, and have met all communication and training requirements.

  • Check the Result

Keep documentation of training actions for four years. Fundae will review the bonuses to ensure that you have not exceeded the available credit and have met all requirements. You can check the results in the “My Files” section of the application.
