About the activity
Azulejo Tile Painting Workshop
Azulejos, the glazed ceramic tiles that cover façades, churches and train stations across Portugal, are one of the country’s most distinctive art forms, with roots tracing back to Moorish influence in the 15th century and a tradition that evolved through Portuguese and Brazilian craftsmanship into the iconic blue-and-white patterns seen today. In this hands-on workshop, teams learn the fundamentals of hand-painting tiles under the guidance of a local ceramicist, working with traditional motifs, brushwork and glazing techniques to create their own piece of wearable, tangible Portuguese heritage.
Ateliers and ceramic studios in Lisbon, Porto and Sintra offer guided group sessions that introduce participants to the history of azulejo art before moving into a fully hands-on painting session, using pre-fired blank tiles, cobalt-blue and polychrome glazes, and classic geometric or floral templates. The format suits complete beginners and rewards patience over speed, making it a calm, focused counterpoint to more high-energy team activities.
Why Choose the Azulejo Workshop for Your Team
A Living Piece of Portuguese Heritage
Azulejos are found everywhere from the São Bento train station to private homes, and understanding the craft behind them gives international teams a genuine cultural anchor to Portugal, one they can literally take home with them, unlike a typical sightseeing stop.
Focus, Patience and Quiet Collaboration
Unlike high-adrenaline formats, tile painting slows a group down. Steady hands, careful attention and quiet conversation while working side by side foster a different kind of team bonding, one built on shared focus and mutual encouragement rather than competition.
